Gutters in Cleveland: what local homeowners should know

Northeast Ohio’s snowbelt east of Cleveland gets heavy lake-effect snow, and the whole region sees freeze-thaw cycles all winter. Gutters must carry snow load and meltwater, so heavy-duty hangers and seamless construction are standard recommendations.

Older neighborhoods in Lakewood, Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights have large homes, steep roofs and big trees – perfect conditions for clogged gutters. Guards and 6-inch gutters are popular upgrades.

Rain, snow and Lake Erie

Cleveland gets about 41 inches of precipitation a year under the 1991–2020 normals, spread fairly evenly through the seasons. Winter is where Northeast Ohio stands out: lake-effect snow off Lake Erie falls hardest east of the city. According to local climate summaries, the east side and eastern suburbs typically get 50 to more than 100 inches of snow a season, compared with 40 to 60 inches on the west side, and Geauga County towns such as Chardon often exceed 100 inches.

That split matters for gutters. In the snow belt, gutters carry snow load, ice and spring meltwater; on the west side, freeze-thaw cycles and heavy spring and summer rain are the bigger issues. See ice dams and gutters.

Ice dams on older homes

Cleveland’s housing stock is old. Many homes in Lakewood, Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, Tremont and Ohio City were built before 1940, with steep roofs, finished attics and limited insulation. Heat escaping through the roof melts snow, which refreezes at the cold eaves and forms ice dams. Water backs up under shingles, and heavy ice pulls gutters off the fascia.

Gutters do not cause ice dams, but they can make the damage worse if they are poorly attached. Hidden hangers at close spacing (about every 2 feet in snow country) screwed into rafter tails, sound fascia and correct pitch help gutters survive winter. Combined sewers and stormwater fees

Older parts of Cleveland and inner-ring suburbs are served by combined sewers, where storm runoff and sewage share pipes. In heavy rain, they overflow into streams and Lake Erie. The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District charges a stormwater fee based on a property’s impervious area (roofs, driveways and patios), grouped into residential tiers, and offers fee credits for practices that reduce runoff, such as rain barrels and rain gardens.

Many older homes still have downspouts connected to underground pipes. If those pipes are cracked or clogged, water backs up at the foundation. Ask the installer to check where buried downspouts actually go before new gutters are connected to them. See disconnecting downspouts.

Trees and leaves

Cleveland is known as the Forest City, and older neighborhoods and suburbs such as Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, Bay Village and Rocky River have mature maples, oaks and sycamores. Leaves fill gutters in October and November, just before freezing weather arrives, and clogged gutters that freeze solid are the worst case in winter. Basements

Most Cleveland-area homes have basements, many with fieldstone, block or brick walls. Roof water dumped at the foundation is one of the most common causes of wet basements. Ohio rules

Ohio does not license home improvement contractors statewide, but many Northeast Ohio cities require contractor registration, and some require permits for certain exterior work. The Ohio Attorney General recommends getting several written estimates, checking complaints and signing a written contract with start and completion dates, materials and total price.
